The Art of Creating Rugs and accessories with natural and environmentally sustainable materials
The process of crafting fique rugs begins with the cultivation of the fique plant in Colombian fields, where it thrives abundantly in the region’s tropical climate. Once the plant reaches maturity, its leaves are harvested and processed to obtain fique fiber, a durable and versatile material. This process involves various stages such as stripping, scraping, fermenting, washing, and drying the leaves to prepare the fiber for weaving.
Once the fiber is ready, the designer at SouLoom collaborates with artisans, providing ideas and guidance for rug design. Using traditional looms or hand-weaving techniques, skilled artisans create beautiful designs that reflect Colombia’s rich tradition and culture. During the weaving process, artisans may incorporate additional elements such as copper threads or other natural materials to add texture and shine to the designs.
After the weaving is complete, the rugs undergo a finishing process that includes edge trimming, washing, and final drying. This ensures that each rug is ready to be showcased in homes around the world, carrying with it the craftsmanship and beauty of Colombia to every corner of the globe.
